Planning, scheduling and budgeting of projects require careful estimation. There are helpful tools to solve the problem of uncertainty.
The work breakdown structure is one of these tools helping to identify the individual tasks in a project. Nevertheless building a WBS seems to be one of the most difficult tasks students have to cope with.
Here is a procedure – easy to follow by the project team:
- Brainstorm all the tasks that need to be done in your project; that means listing all the major deliverables. Each work package must be named as an activity that generates a product.
- Write the tasks down on Post-it notes and attach them to a pin board.
- Finally arrange the Post-it notes around the main areas of activities and put them into a diagram.
