A language course is generally a suitable starting point for learning a new language. Furthermore, there are various methods that accelerate the learning process depending on the individual learner type and sometimes also allow the learning process to be organised in a more entertaining way. In principle, it can be said that an environment in which the target language is present both orally and in writing is advantageous. Due to the global presence of a language, its acquisition is associated with a variety of offers and materials that facilitate the learning process. However, the situation is different for less widely spoken languages.
The use of a language learning app is recommended. With one of the many language learning apps available on the market, you can learn anytime and anywhere, even during short breaks, using your smartphone. The best-known providers include Babbel, Duolingo and Rosetta Stone.
Using post-its: If you want to learn a lot of everyday vocabulary in a short space of time, you can put sticky notes on objects in your flat or house and write the translation of the respective term on them. This way, the corresponding term will be visible every time the object is used, so that the vocabulary can be learnt almost incidentally. In places where learners spend long periods of time, it can be useful to display small overviews with grammar rules, idioms or even entire verb tables.
Learn in tandem: Find a native speaker who regularly talks to you in the language. This way, you will not only practise your listening comprehension, but also get practice in speaking. You will usually practise your language with your tandem partner in return. Websites from various providers can help you find a suitable language partner. You can also search for language learning meetings in your city. These are advertised on Meetup, for example.
Films in the original language: We recommend watching films and series in the new language. You can optionally activate the display of German or foreign-language subtitles to reflect your learning progress. At the beginning of the learning process, it is advisable to use subtitles in the native language in order to grasp the meaning of what is being said as fully as possible. As soon as you feel confident in the basics of the new language, it is advisable to switch to subtitles in the original language. This allows them to practise spelling and look up unknown words. Using content that is already familiar, such as a favourite film, makes the process even easier, as learners can concentrate better on the language as such. It can also be assumed that you will enjoy learning more as a result.
Read a lot in the new language: It is recommended that you read a lot in the new language in order to improve your language skills. If you are not yet able to read whole novels or non-fiction books, language learning magazines or learning thrillers can be used to browse through. These are specially designed for foreign language learners, are available in different levels of difficulty and always include important vocabulary translations. They often also contain one or two grammar exercises and explanations. It is advisable to use foreign language blogs and websites on the Internet. Browser extensions with a dictionary function can help with the translation of words. Selected words can be translated at the click of a mouse so that you can expand your vocabulary while reading without having to look them up.
